WELCOME AND CELEBRATIONS

Welcome to the Second Sunday of Easter

LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES

Lighting the Christ Candle

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.”

In the shadows of life, Jesus proclaims himself our guiding light. No matter where we are or what circumstances we find ourselves in, Jesus is with us.

May our Christ candle serve to remind us of the Light that never goes out.

Lighting the Candle for truth and reconciliation

We light this candle for truth and reconciliation. May the light of this candle illuminate our hearts and bless and heal all our relations. May our faith in the eternal light of Creator join us together in forgiveness, freedom, love and Oneness.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE LANDS (Unison)

We acknowledge, honour and respect this land and the Anishinaabe/Mississauga peoples with whom Treaty 20, Williams treaty, was signed, on the lands where we are.  We acknowledge and give thanks for the lands and people of treaties and unceded territories of all who are worshiping. It is up to all of us to live into truth, respect and reconciliation with all our relations.

CALL TO WORSHIP

We come into this space, prepared to celebrate the God of energy, life, and truth, aware of the needs of the world, and open to the Spirit that leads us. May God guide us on our journey.

May God support us as we seek to share life and truth with others.

We come into this moment, aware of the variety of needs that surround us and open to a future yet to be revealed.

May God guide us on our journey.

May God encourage us as we follow the Way, reaching out with faith and hope and goodwill toward others.

In words and in songs, in stories and in prayers, in quiet times and in happy times, God is with us.

In this time of worship, God is with us.

Thanks be to God. May God guide us on our Faith  journey.

OPENING PRAYER (Unison)

Wise and Loving God, you are the one who guides us, counsels us, teaches us and raises us up.

We open our hearts and minds to your presence, which permeates all of creation.

You are known by many names, Counsellor, Advocate, Savior and Spirit of Truth and Love but you are one Holy Spirit.

You are like the glowing embers of a fire that has long since been lit. Even exposed to the rain and wind, you continue to burn steadily.

We come before your eternal light, humbled by your presence, willing to follow your lead, and listen to your still small voice. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

The days are lengthening, the temperatures are warming, and the rhythm of nature is being transformed. In a similar way, the promise of Easter burst into our midst, and we know that God has created a place of renewal for each one of us. We rejoice in the transformative power of our Creator.

OFFERTORY PRAYER

We know there is much need, O God, and we offer what we can to help. Spread the good we intend where it is needed, we pray, that it may help our neighbours, near and far, through Christ, in love.

Amen.

STORY AND PRAYERS FOR THE YOUNG AND YOUNG AT HEART

WE HEAR GOD’S WORD

SCRIPTURE READINGS

John 20:19–31 (Read by Helen)

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Jesus Appears to Thomas

24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus[a]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe[b] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

MINISTRY OF MUSIC: “That Name” Christena-Lynn

Psalm 16 (Read by Lorrie)

Keep me safe, my God,
    for in you I take refuge.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    apart from you I have no good thing.”
I say of the holy people who are in the land,
    “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
    I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
    or take up their names on my lips.

Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
    you make my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
    even at night my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    nor will you let your faithful[b] one see decay.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,
    with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
