WELCOME AND CELEBRATIONS

CALL TO WORSHIP:

Today we are at the beginning,

the beginning of a New Year.

Loving Creator, Colourful God, your creating power amazes and astounds.

To see a rainbow placed in the sky is an amazing display of vibrancy, beauty, and promise. Who but you would think to blend all those colours? And then we look around and look deep into the souls of one another. Yet again, we see diversity and brilliance! Oh, how you believe in us!

Let us never take for granted the promise that you made with all humanity.

May we be like the Rainbow blending and flowing and bending without breaking.

As we create anew, may we remember that like the rainbow in all its beautiful unique colours, humanity in all our individual and unique expressions just like the rainbow are joined together as One.

We pray in the name of our beloved Jesus. Amen.

LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES

The Christ Candle

There once was the one that had done such marvelous and amazing things that people decided to follow him. As they followed him they started to wonder who he was. So they asked him. Who are you? He said “I am the Light of the World“.   The Christ Candle is lit.

Let us welcome Jesus in our midst this morning and allow his truth, his way and his healing light to fill us up in body, in mind, in heart and soul .

Second Candle

Let there be Peace on Earth and let it begin with us.  The Peace Candle is lit.

Let there be reconciliation, forgiveness and healing. Let there be acceptance, unity and oneness.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE LANDS

We acknowledge, honour and respect this land and the Anishnabeg/Mississauga peoples with whom Treaty 20, Williams treaty, was signed,

on the lands where we are and we acknowledge also and give thanks for the lands and people of treaties and unceded territories of all who are worshiping.

It is up to all of us to live into truth, respect, reconciliation and right relations.

OPENING PRAYER/ASSURANCE

Come, light our world, O God. Cast love into the corners where hatred hides, shine peace upon the shadows of strife, turn off distress and turn on joy, light our world with the sunshine of hope.

As we enter into a new chapter, a new year, bring us resurrection and all we need , and need to know to create anew.   We put our hand in the hand of the one who stilled the waters.

We pray in the name of Jesus, light of the World. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

We can rest assured that when we ask and even when we don’t God’s Grace is poured upon us like a beautiful water fall of light always, and in all ways. God knows us by name and knows what we need before we do.

Grace is flowing to us and through us and filling us with peace, love and blessings when we least expect it.

Grace is a gift from God revealed in moments of our connection with one another.

Grace is a gift from God revealed in Jesus. For this we give our infinite love and gratitude. Amen.

HYMN: “I Have Called You By Your Name” MV #161 https://youtu.be/S3KHwIjji2w

(Words: Daniel Charles Damon)

I have called you by your name, you are mine; I have gifted you and ask you now to shine.

I will not abandon you; all my promises are true. You are gifted, called, and chosen; you are mine.

I will help you learn my name as you go; read it written in my people, help them grow.

Pour the water in my name, speak the word your soul can claim, offer Jesus’ body, given long ago.

I know you will need my touch as you go; feel it pulsing in creation’s ebb and flow.

Like the woman reaching out, choosing faith in spite of doubt, hold the hem of Jesus’ robe,

then let it go.

I have given you a name, it is mine; I have given you my Spirit as a sign.

With my wonder in your soul, make my wounded children whole; go and tell my precious people they are mine.

OFFERING/OFFERTORY PRAYER:

Revitalizing God, transform our gifts with your immense love, so that they may make a difference to anyone in need in our world. Transform our hearts, so that we worship joyfully and give generously. Transform our lives that we may affirm your grace in everyone we encounter. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS:

Ephesians 1:3–14 Praise for Spiritual Blessings in Christ

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he[a] predestined us for adoption to sonship[b] through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he[c] made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

John 1:1-9 The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

SERMON MESSAGE: “Put Your Hands in the Hand“ (Sermon will follow in the new year)

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN: “Put Your Hand in the Hand of the Man Who Stilled the Waters” https://youtu.be/qFNGB_M2USM

(Words: Gene MacLennan)

Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water
Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea
Take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently
By puttin’ your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee

Every time I look into the Holy Book I want to tremble (tremble)
Or when I read about the part where the carpenter cleared the temple (Temple)
For the buyers and the sellers were no different fellas than what I profess to be
And it causes me shame to know we’re not the people we should be

So, put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water
Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea
Take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently
By puttin’ your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee

My mama taught me how to pray before I reached the age of seven
She said, “there’ll come a time when there’ll probably be room in heaven”
But I’m feeling kinda guilty ’bout the number of times to do what we must do
Well you do what you must do but we forget what he said, then we figure that he’ll still make room

So, you gotta put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water
Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea
Take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently

By puttin’ your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee

Everybody come along

Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water (Who stilled the water)
Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea (Who calmed the sea)
Take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently
